The Open Championship 2015, the 144th Championship returns to St Andrews University.
Broadcast RF provided a total of 12 wireless radio camera systems for BBC, ESPN and TV Asahi coverage of the 144th Open Golf Championships held at St Andrews Golf Club in Scotland.
In addition to this, for the first time a drone was used to provide aerial pictures for the event. Aerial Camera Systems provided the drone, and Broadcast RF provided a HD vision downlink along with a data control system for the Sony F55 camera system. This was the first live event to use a camera which was able to be painted to match existing cameras.
The wireless cameras providing course coverage for the three broadcasters were received on a huge fibre network with antennas strategically placed around the course. It gave us plenty of redundancy when high winds and bad weather affected play and brought the hoists down. This meant we did not have to rely on a few antennas on the hoist at full height and we could route the appropriate antennas placed around the course to their relevant receivers.
Chris Brandrick, Sales Director at Broadcast RF, commented “We’re excited to be back at the Open Championship for the second year. The course is a challenging one for both the players and our team, and we are fortunate to have the best equipment on hand to avoid any issues. With a worldwide audience, there really is no room for error. Our engineers and survey team do an unbelievable amount of prep ahead of the event to ensure there are no gaps in coverage.”
Zach Johnson impressively claimed his second title this year in a final round four- hole playoff with Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. Although it looked as if Jordon Spieth was heading straight for the 2015 championship, his tee shot and hugely over hit putt proved to be a great loss. It was Johnson’s consistency throughout the competition and birdie putt in the 72nd hole which managed to win him the competition. Johnson expressed his gratitude online via twitter, stating that his dreams had been realised and goals accomplished through this Championship.
